April was actually a month of two halves. The first ten days saw the overflow of Pratchett month, with readings from Small Gods and other stories ending in arguably the funniest of all the extracts - a reading from the hysterically funny Thud!. We then moved into new territory with several readings based upon a common theme - and April became the month about the end of the world. When we started April, the news was telling us we were all going broke; by the time we ended April the news was telling us we were all going to die of mutant flu from Mexico. Never has reading Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Heller's Catch-22 seemed so suitable. On top of this Elwe continued her excellent contributions, bringing us Mark Twain. Tuesday 14th 1pm Beautiful Stories for Evil Children Gideon Defoe's The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists The Pirate Captain and his oddball crew return in a live reading by O'Casey's reader Danton Thirroul from this extremely funny book. Thar'll be hams tonight lads! Friday 17th 3pm The End of the World George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four Just how bad it can get? Presenting a live reading of George Orwell's claustrophobic and terrifying 1984... Big Brother is watching you! A live reading by O'Casey's regular Danton Thirroul. Tuesday 21st 1pm Beautiful Stories for Evil Children Mark Twain's The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County An event given over to the fine art of storytelling - we gather around the bar, grab ourselves a nice drink and enjoy the tale... this evening the brilliant Elwe Eldrich presents a story by that master craftsman of the short tale... Mark Twain! Friday 24th 3pm The End of the World Joseph Heller's Catch-22 Presenting a live reading of Joseph Heller's horrifying Catch-22... the antidote to anyone who suggests war can be justified. Savage, funny and brilliant - a live reading by O'Casey's regular Danton Thirroul. Saturday 25th 3pm By Shining Water Missives from the Darkness by Saybera Drake Her first night was one of our best attended events - and now Saybera Drake, talented poetess and artist, returns to O'Casey's for her second reading. A truly talented lady, Saybera's poems cover a gamut of inspirations and topics, from rock stars and relationships to the vast realms of fantasy. Saybera is a fresh and talented voice and we are honoured to have her return to our bar. Tuesday 28th 1pm The End of the World Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis Presenting a live reading of Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis - a lyrical and savage hymn to New York City in the latter part of the 20th century. Shocking, provocative and powerful, this one is not for the faint hearted.
